Last Friday after Swimming, Room 1 and 2 enjoyed a nice time at McKee Reserve. We couldn't go down to the beach because the tide was in, but we did have a fantastic time on the playground. Here are some videos of the children...

Homework Challenge - Week 5

This week your homework challenge is to guess how long a caterpillar is in it's chrysalis for before it becomes a butterfly. How many days? We will all have a guess, then we will choose a few caterpillars in our classroom and see how long it is actually in its chrysalis for!

Also what is your favourite part of the life cycle of the monarch butterfly? Do you like the caterpillar the best? or the chrysalis? or the butterfly? And why do you like it the best?

Our first Monarch Butterfly!

Today our first chrysalis hatched! We went outside to have our morning tea and when we came back inside, this is what we saw!!

Miss Mansell then carefully put it onto one of the sunflowers that we grew last year.

Discovery

Every Wednesday afternoon Room 1 has discovery. This is where there are different activities children can participate in. It is a time to learn and discover through "structured play."

It also is a time where students can put into practise the key competencies of the NZ curriculum: Managing Self, Participating & Contributing, Thinking, Using Language, Symbols & Text and Relating to Others.

Today the children could choose to do a colourful painting by mixing red, yellow and blue paint.

They could work together with each other, the cars and the blocks to

make a joint town.

In Room 1, we have some swan plants with caterpillars on them. We have been watching them closely every day and seeing how they have been growing and changing.

Swimming!

Room one has been enjoying swimming! Everyday we get to swim in Tasman Pool from 12:30-1:15. We go with Room 2 and Miss Mansell and Mrs Sumby teach us. The water is cold when you first hop in, but it soon feels warm! Let's hope we will continue getting lots of sunny days!

A Trip to see the Eels!

On Friday, 3rd February, Room 1 had a class trip to Jester House (across the road) to see the eels! Miss Mansell bought some eel food and in twos we feed the eels. It was great fun! We also played on the playground that was there!

Serena said, “An eel nearly bit the stick off me."

Isaiah said, “An eel tried to bite my eye out.”

Jorgia said, “I touched an eel and it felt soggy.”

Jack said, “One eel tried to bite Koru-Akei’s face.”

Koru-Akei said, “Isaiah and me fed a huge eel. It grabbed my stick and almost pulled me into the water.”

Ollie said, “Our pottle fell into the water and the eels tried to eat it.”

Rosy said, “I touched an eel and it felt silky.”

Jacinta said, “I was feeding an eel when another sneaky eel came and tried to get the food so I just gave it to him.”

Abby said, “A cheeky eel grabbed the stick off me. It was holding it so hard it nearly bit me.”

Abby said, “A very creepy eel nearly bit my finger.”

Jack said, “I had to get my stick off an eel that had taken it.”

Story Writing in Room 2

In Room 2 we are writing recounts. A recount is a story about something we have done (we can remember a recount)! Here are some of our stories.

Last Saturday we went to the speedway. We watched the teams race. Nelson Tigers versed the Glen Eagles. The Glen Eagles won and the Nelson Tigers lost. After the teams raced it was the sidecars. We saw a sidecar crash. It was a really bad crash. I will tell you about it. The red one's passenger bumped into the orange driver and then the orange driver spun around like this... 0 ...and smashed the orange passenger. He died because the sidecar smashed the orange passenger.

On Saturday Mum rang Chrissy and we met at Chrissy's house. Then we had a little play. Then we went to Rabbit Island. First we went to the beach. Then we had lunch. After lunch we went for a walk through the bushes.

Welcome back, Cookie!

Cookie has been away in Room 2 for a long time and has now come home to Room 1. We are all so excited to have him back. When it is our turn to have Cookie, we get to sit in the special Cookie chair and help Mrs Prout with special teacher jobs. At the end of the day we can't wait to find out who's house he is going to next. Here he is enjoying a weekend sleepover at Jayden's house.

Petorukelani: "It was fun singing songs with Kath B and doing jump jam. I liked it how we got to do dancing because we got to move our bodies around lots. I liked making the flags too, It is fun drawing."

Feathers, Fur and Fins

This term we have done a lot of hands on learning around animals. We have had a great time at the S.P.C.A and Natureland, as well as, in the classroom with visiting pets. One of our most significant trips, however, was to Ruby Bay. Due to the Aquarium burning down, we were unable to visit, but Richard was so great and provided a fantastic programme for us at McKee's Reserve. Thanks Richard.

Fire Drill at TBCS

Last Thursday we had a fire drill. We were quick and we remembered exactly what to do because we have been learning about fire safety in our Firewise unit. It was very exciting, and a little scary, to hear the fire truck come racing up to the school. "Look, Mrs Prout, it's Aaron! Aaron's here!" called Isamaeli when he saw the fireman come across the field to meet us in his fireman suit. Aaron was pleased with our response to the drill and invited Room 1 and 2 to check out the fire truck and meet the other fireman. We got to watch Miss Mansell and Miss Alley race to put on all the special clothes and boots that fireman wear. We got to try on the helmets and squirt water from the hose. It was a lot of fun and a great way to finish our day!

The Three Little Pigs

Discovery this week was inspired by the story of The Three Little Pigs. Mrs Hough found a great clip on YouTube and we built our own houses from lego, wood, PMP equipment, rulers, fabric, cardboard and wallpaper. We had tons of fun. Here is the clip and some photos of us in action.

Careers in the Classroom

Over the last few weeks we have interviewed some of our parents about the jobs they do. Dr Collette brought apples to share, we hammered and drilled when Mr Denny came and we learnt how to keep our smiles brighter when Mr Pienaar came. We learnt how to write questions during literacy time and it was great when we were able to "hot seat" our guests. They were great!

Exploring Geometry

Yesterday Mrs Hough came and took Room 1 and 2 together for a shared geometry lesson. She showed us a powerpoint with awesome photos of animals, buildings and works of art, filled with amazing shapes. After looking at these pictures and talking about the shapes we could see, we spent time using equipment and games in the classroom to make and sort shapes. It was fun!

We were so pleased when we read our blog and saw a comment from another school from the North Island. We decided to visit their blog and comment on what they were doing also. Kids of Character

Today Room 1 and Room 3 went to Woodlands Retirement Home and shared songs, prayers and conversations with it's residents. Together we all observed a minute silence for those in Christchurch and Japan. It was a special time and so lovely to see the children sharing and talking with our elderly community.

On Friday we went to Marahau in buses and walked to Tinline Bay. We got very tired on the way back but we had lots of fun. At Tinline Bay we caught crabs and swam in the sea. We had to get changed behind our towels because there was no dressing rooms. We saw some cool caves.
